Turnaround Has to Start Now For Eagles

Donovan McNabb (5) is sacked by New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck

If the Eagles are going to turn their 2007 season around, putting the first four weeks of the season behind them and getting set to take care of the 1-4 Jets at home this week has to happen. The team cannot lose again on Sunday if playing football past January 1 is in their plans. Part of the issue is that the rest of the NFC East is looking better and better each week, as they boast an impressive 11-3 combined record, while the Eagles sit at 1-3. The Bills could have helped out on Monday night if someone would have showed them how to finish off a game. Instead they let the Cowboys hang around long enough to somehow find a way to leave Western New York with a 25-24 win.

Eagles coaches and players are starting to realize that the season is going to slip away quickly if they don’t start winning games. “Washington is building momentum. Dallas is building momentum, and New York is building momentum,” tight end L.J. Smith said Monday. “These teams really have gotten better since last year.” And the Eagles, based on their record and what they have shown to date in 2007 – have not. They have not played well on offense minus the 51-point outburst against the Lions in week three, and the defense has yet to allow less than 16 points in any of the four games they have played in 2007.

If you want to be encouraged about the 1-3 start, consider that the Eagles and Jets are the only teams that have started 1-3 or worse and managed to make the playoffs three different times during the Super Bowl era. Still, it’s not the way you want to go as a team, but it’s where the birds sit today as they continue to get ready for New York. “Our focus is on the Philadelphia Eagles and winning every game that we play,” running back Brian Westbrook said. “We could win however many games we have left, and that would be a great season. It would be a slow start but a great season.”
