Will the Eagles Make a Run at Pats CB Samuel?

Samuel

Add another name to the list of possible teams that look as if they will make a run at Pats free agent to be cornerback Asante Samuel. PhillyBurbs.com is reporting that the Eagles are taking a long look at Samuel, who is set to become a free man from New England on February 29th. The Eagles may be losing a corner in the meantime, as they have reportedly given permission to corner Lito Sheppard to seek a trade, though the team is denying that rumor.

Back to Samuel. The Pats corner has already been talked about with a number of teams that would love to have his services, such as the Jets, Cowboys and Texans. He will command top dollar on the market, and it looks as if it’s going to come down to what team wants to pay the most for him to come over. Last season Nate Clements was in a similar boat with the Bills, and once he hit the free agent market he was able to land a $27.25 million dollar deal from the 49’ers.

The question will be if the Eagles really did give Sheppard, who has not played a full season since 2003, permission to seek a trade. If Philly moves the corner, they will have a hole at that position, a hole that could be filled by Samuel if the team wants to ante up the cash and likely make him the highest paid corner in NFL history. If the Eagles don’t want to do it, there will be plenty of interest elsewhere.
