Eagles Will Not Use the Franchise Tag in 2009

Today’s Philly Enquirer reports that the team is not going to place the franchise tag on any of their players before the start of free agency on the 27th:

The Eagles will not put the franchise tag on any of their free agents, a team source said today. The Eagles have five veterans who can become unrestricted free agents: offensive tackles Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan, safety Brian Dawkins, tight end L.J. Smith and running back Correll Buckhalter. Although there appeared to be no pressing need for the Eagles to designate a franchise player, Thomas seemed to be a candidate because it’s not likely they would want to lose both of their veteran offensive tackles but the source said the Eagles believe they’ll be able to come to terms with him.
