Q&A w/ Eagles First-Round Pick Jeremy Maclin

NFL Draft Eagles Football
Sporting News correspondent Geoff Mosher talks with WR Jeremy Maclin, who was drafted with the No. 19 overall pick by the Eagles.

Q. Upset about sliding in the draft?
A. “I think it worked out for the best. I’m a firm believer, everything happens for a reason. I can’t complain going to this organization.”

Q. Why is this a great opportunity for you?

A. “Nobody likes losing. This organization definitely has a great track record of winning games. They got all the guys in the right spots to be contenders every year, one of the best quarterbacks in the league. You got (Brian) Westbrook. You got (Kevin) Curtis. You got DeSean (Jackson). I couldn’t ask for a better situation.”

Q. What will it be like to play with DeSean?
A. “It’s exciting to know that you kind of got another guy like that, that can take pressure off you and you can take pressure of him. He can return kicks, I can return kicks. It’s exciting and it gives defenses more to worry about.”

Q. Can you make an impact similar to the one DeSean did his rookie year?
A. “Yes, sir. I don’t understand why I can’t. My thing here is to do everything that the coaches ask me to do and to do it to the best of my ability, whether that be (to) come out and catch five balls a game, whether that be (to) come out and catch two balls a game or just return kicks, whatever. I’m going to be thrilled and I’m going to do it to the best of my ability.”

Q. How did you impress the Eagles at combine?
A. “I think I was just being myself. I think a lot of guys trying to go in there trying to put on a front, trying to talk well or try to talk kind of out of their league a little bit and coaches kind of pick up on that. So I just think you go in there and be yourself. I don’t understand how the meetings can go wrong. I just went in there and was myself and everything went good.”

Q. Did you expect to go higher than No. 19 and was there a team you thought would take you?

A. “You hear all that stuff and obviously you see that a lot of people had me projected to go higher. I expected to go (higher), but like I said earlier, I’m a firm believer everything happens for a reason. You can’t ask for a better situation than what I have right now.”

Q. Why is your versatility a bonus for the Eagles?
A. “It’s added value. If you have a guy who can do all those kinds of things, obviously you can get him the ball in different situations. If you got a lot of those guys on one team it definitely causes fits for the defense.”

Q. What went through your mind when Darrius Heyward-Bey went to Oakland at No.7?
A. “Like I said, you see all the mock drafts. A lot of them had me projected there. Al Davis is a guy that makes all the decisions and everybody knows that he loves speed. Credit to Heyward-Bey, he ran the fastest 40 at the combine. I knew that was a possibility, that’s why I didn’t get too worked up about it.”

Q. Were you surprised the Eagles drafted you?
A. “Kind of, because I hadn’t had much contact with them, that’s the only reason why. When I got the call, obviously I don’t recognize the area codes, but it was the Eagles and I had a huge smile on my face. It was great.”
