Eagles Lose Westbrook; Top Redskins Anyway 27-17

The Eagles made a move at the trade deadline for Rams linebacker Will Witherspoon. It was a move that paid off right away Monday night, as the vet had a pick six as well as a forced fumble in the teams 27-17 win over the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field.

“You can’t expect to get a sack, cause a fumble, turnover, interception for touchdown—whatever,” Witherspoon said. “It’s like, ‘What? Who in their right mind would think that in their first game?’ But when it comes down to it, it happened.”

Second-year wide out DeSean Jackson also had a big night on the offenisve side for Philly, going for a 67-yard touchdown on a reverse early in the game, then hauling in a 57-yard touchdown grab from Donovan McNabb. The Eagles QB completed 15 of 25 passes for 156 yards, getting his 200th touchdown pass and surpassing 30,000 yards passing for his career.

Most of the highlights on both sides of the ball came in the first half, as the Eagles led 27-10 at halftime. The Eagles defense also took it to Washington QB Jason Campbell, as they forced six sacks, four total fumbles and a pick. Campbell was 29-for-43 for 284 yards with two TD’s and an interception.

About the only bad thing for the Eagles was early in the game when running back Brian Westbrook left in the first quarter with a concussion. Coach Andy Reid said he expects Westbrook to recover fully but wasn’t certain whether his star running back will play next week.

Westbrook was hurt when his helmet collided with linebacker London Fletcher’s right knee at the end of a 5-yard run. The running back remained on the ground for several minutes before he was helped up and led off the field directly to the locker room.

“It looked bad,” Mikell said. “Anytime a guy is just out like that and not responding, you don’t know what’s going on. We were praying.”

With the Giants losing on Sunday night, the Eagles are now just a half game back of first in the division at 4-2. They get set for a showdown with the Giants at home on Sunday.
