Defensive Priority: Better Tackling

Sunday night’s game against the Giants was a very poor performance by the defense in terms of tackling. There were way too many tackles missed and some of these led to bad plays. I think Quintin Mikell may have had the worst game of his professional career and don’t even get me started on the way Asante Samuel tackles (or attempts to).

In their Monday night win against the Cardinals, Frank Gore ran the ball for over 160 yards. If you combine this effort with how the Eagles tackled, it should be pretty obvious how the 49ers could possibly find success on Sunday. You know they are going to come out and try to get Gore hot early and control the clock. Our offense is too good for teams to let us have the ball over and over. We can see that by the amount of points they’ve put up in the last two games. The offense is high powered and the 49ers just can’t hang in a shootout type game like the Giants did.

This is why a priority for the team has to be better tackling. I hope that this week in practice, Quintin Mikell is challenging himself and the rest of the team to tackle much better than they did against the Giants. It’s great for our team to score that many points in a game, but at the same time it’s horrible to give up that many points to an opposing team (and they didn’t get the defensive and special teams touchdowns like we did). Tackling is something that has to be improved. It is a fundamental and is the first key to success for any defense.

I haven’t been overly upset in other games by the overall tackling performance by the defense besides this Giants came so I hope they can shake it off. If not, we’re all in for a long day and a disappointing loss. However, I see Q getting his boys back to where they need to be and holding the 49ers offense to little or nothing on Sunday.
