I don’t think anyone is going to disagree with me on this one. The Eagles need to lock up Leonard Weaver and not let him go. Before Weaver came in this season, it felt like eons since the Eagles had a legitimate answer for the position. It was never taken seriously and was more of an experiment every year, let’s try to convert a player to fullback and see how badly they can fail. However, in the last offseason, the Eagles brought in Leonard Weaver and the city rejoiced. We had an ACTUAL fullback who we knew could block and catch an occasional ball out of the backfield. Little did we know, we would get so much more.
If someone told you that Leonard Weaver, the Eagles fullback, would get 70 carries this season, I don’t think you would believe them. Through the first seven weeks of the season, Weaver had four carries. I’m sure this wouldn’t shock anyone. However, in Week Eight, the Eagles fed Weaver eight times as he piled up 75 yards rushing and a touchdown. From that point on, Weaver averaged 6.6 carries a game while recording 323 yards rushing and adding 140 yards receiving. After that first Giants game, everyone said screw blocking, let’s get the ball in Weaver’s hands and let him run some people over.
Weaver found a lot of success on the ground, but there were a lot of missed opportunities due to some bonehead play calling in short yardage and goal line situations. We’re all hoping to see those problems worked out as they’ve plagued us for too long.
One thing is certain though, Leonard Weaver must be brought back. His contributions to the team are much needed and he carries himself well off the field. He is the kind of guy that belongs in Philadelphia, and I hope to see him remain for many years to come.
