What the Release of Brian Westbrook Tells Us

Well it’s the day after and although Brian Westbrook is still on the roster and will continue to be for a little longer, it still is sad to know he won’t be an Eagle anymore. We all knew this could very well happen but it doesn’t help heal the pain, especially since there are still uncertainties with Westbrook’s career. Could he be the second long-time Eagle in a row to end up wearing another jersey? Only time will tell and I can only wish him the best in whatever he decides to do.

Like this move or not, I think it tells us a few things:

1. The Eagles are a business first
This has been known for quite some time, but I think the Eagles take the “business first” approach much more serious than other teams around the league. This has been evident lately by the way they’ve handled older players. The Eagles never liked keeping guys over the age of 30 and with the way they handled Brian Dawkins and Brian Westbrook, you can tell they won’t make big exceptions. Both of these guys were nearing the ends of their careers but definitely had tread on the tires (look at Dawkins last season).

2. We need a running back
Whether it be the draft, free agency, or both. The Eagles, as it stands now, will be looking to feature a guy who will be entering his second year in the league. LeSean McCoy showed us plenty of potential last year but teams who are successful on the ground usually have at least a two running back system. Leonard Weaver has shown he can take carries (ps – can we sign him already?) but it would be nice to have another weapon in the backfield to compliment McCoy.

3. We lack offensive leadership
With Brian Westbrook, we had a young offensive unit. Without Brian Westbrook, we have an extremely young offensive unit. The talent is there, but there’s no denying the youth. To me, Donovan McNabb isn’t a great leader and without Westbrook around will be expected to take on a larger leadership role (let’s just go with the scenario that he’ll return next season). Defensive leadership was an issue last season and now it looks like the same issue will exist on offense. If the Eagles bring in a veteran running back, it could help but I’d like to see some of the younger guys develop the leadership.

How do you feel the release of Brian Westbrook affects the team?
