Brett Favre Out, Michael Vick In?

The annual Brett Favre circus has begun, so let the rumors begin.

Currently, there are conflicting stories regarding whether or not Favre will be hanging it up. Some are saying that he said he will be while others disagree. However, if Favre does decide to retire for the third time, it puts the Vikings in quite a predicament.

As it stands right now, Tavaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels, and Joe Webb are the other quarterbacks on the roster so there’s an obvious drop off in talent. Jackson would step into the starting role but has already shown us he doesn’t seem to have what it takes to be a starting quarterback in this league. With that in mind, the Vikings would more than likely start scouring other teams rosters for a solution.

The Eagles are in a very good position at the starting quarterback position. They have Kevin Kolb at the helm with a quarterback behind him that’s more than capable of being a starter. Behind those two stands rookie Mike Kafka who is a work in progress but has shown potential thus far.

So would the Vikings be interested in trading for Michael Vick? I don’t see why not. However, I think they would have to be prepared to give up a lot to get him. Although the Eagles don’t plan on starting Vick, they do plan on using him in various sets and I think he’ll probably see more time on the field this year than he saw last year.

Brad Childress is obviously very familiar with Andy Reid so I don’t think he’d hesitate to check in with Reid to see what it would take to get a deal done. I’m not entirely sure Reid would be willing to trade Vick to Minnesota, especially since Minnesota is a playoff caliber team and may not be without Favre.

It’s an interesting debate, but I don’t think the Eagles will do it. I believe they have big plans for Vick in 2010 so the Vikings will have to look elsewhere. Either way, I’ll be happy to not see Favre play against the Eagles in late December if he does decide to hang it up.
