Preseason Preview: Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Jets

The final week of preseason football has arrived and I’m sure everyone is excited. In just over a week, the regular season will kick off and the NFL will be in full swing. However, we still have one more preseason game to get through and there is a lot on the line for a number of players.

Here are some of the match-ups I’ll be looking at tonight:

Eagles Rush Offense vs. Jets Rush Defense
Eldra Buckley definitely has the edge for the third running back position right now, but he will need to solidify that position tonight. Although the third running back will be primarily used on special teams, I still want to have a guy on the team who can run the ball if needed.

I think Mike Bell might see some action tonight and I’d like to see him step up and do something, especially since he won’t be up against a first-team defense.

Eagles Corners vs. Jets Receivers
The guys that we see starting the game will be guys who are battling for the nickel position. I’ve like what I’ve seen out of Dimitri Patterson and Trevard Lindley so far this season, and I’d like to see them to play at a high level tonight.

Patterson seems to have the inside track to the nickel corner position, but we did see Lindley take some snaps for Ellis Hobbs last game. Joselio Hanson was a guy I had high hopes for but he seems to have fallen off the map.

Eagles Special Teams vs. Jets Special Teams
There will be roster spots that are won and lost tonight based on special teams performance. That’s a fact. The bubble players should know this, and should realize that they’re going to have to give everything they’ve got on special teams tonight.

We should see a lot of guys trying to make plays tonight. Those who succeed will find themselves on the roster, those who don’t will not.

Mike Kafka vs. Jets Defense
Kafka will get the opportunity to play the entire second half tonight. He is a guy we’ve seen do some pretty nice things this preseason. The play that obviously sticks out is his touchdown throw to Riley Cooper last Friday to win the game for the Eagles.

In 2011, it’s more than likely that Vick will no longer be on the roster so the Eagles will have a decision to make for their backup quarterback position. Will Kafka be the guy or will they go out and get someone else. Tonight is just one more test for him to prove that he can be the number two guy.

What match-ups will you be looking for tonight?

Mike Kafka
