The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: Eagles vs Lions Edition

The Good:
The good was Vick’s 1st successful start since 2006. You probably already
know the stats, but what you wouldn’t unless you watched the game was his command of the offense & how strong his arm is. He threw from the pocket & made quick decisions. He escaped pressure & led the team to it’s 1st win of the 2010 season. Coach Reid announced Vick will be returrning to his back up role this week when Kevin Kolb returns, but he has definitely raised the stakes & added pressure on Kolb to perform, or else the ground swell in the city will be screaming for Vick to start.{At least the fans who are not already screaming that after this display}

Lesean “Shady” McCoy was great. He hit the holes hard and had a 3 TD
performance. The 1st 3TD rushing game since Charlie Garner in “95. He seems to have improved his grip on the ball in the offseason as has yet to fumble this season which was a big question mark coming into 2010 after his rookie season. He put up his 1st 100 yd game in his short Eagles career, and had to inspire confidence in the coaching staff to get him the ball after the small amount of touches he had in week 1.

McCoy’s 16 carries against the Lions was his biggest rushing workload since Week 12 of last season when he had 17 rushing attempts in a win over the Redskins.

The 2010 rookies are producing on the field. Graham was able to notch his
1st career sack along with a couple of tackles before being removed from
the game with a minor shoulder injury. 2nd Rd pick Nate Allen has his 2nd
interception in as many weeks on a great end zone pick. Even Riley Cooper
got involved and made his 1st NFL catch for 20yds. He also gave up the ball on a onside kick in the 4th quarter, but overall I would say it was a great day for the rookies.

The Bad:
The offense line continues to lose some one-on-one battles and allow
pressure in the backfield. I’m not calling out any names cause I’m not sure
who’s at fault, but Mcglynn appeared to have a good game at center. He made some good blocks & seemed to be able to hold his own in the middle, and that was going against 2nd overall pick in 2010 draft Suh. He wasn’t perfect, but he wasn’t the biggest issue up front. LT J. Peters went down twice in the game but was able to return. Hopefully whatever ankle & knee injuries he sustained are not major & he will start next weekend, the line does not need any more injuries to compound the problem.

It’s hard to fault a defense with 2 picks & 2 sacks, but that game was more
stressful then it should have been. They gave up 15 points in the 4th
quarter including a 2 point conversion when the game could have been put
away. I’m not sure if they just relaxed with a comfortable lead, or the
Lions were just able to figure out something, but they need to finish
strong before the game is on the line. The finally shut down the Lions on
the last drive when they had to, but I would have been happy with a 34-17
win.

The Ugly:
The worse thing I saw was Gaither get pushed around inside. Stewart Bradley vs Omar Gaither at the MLB is like night & day. The Lions had WAY too much success running up the middle of the defense, & without reviewing the tape, alot of that has to be on Bradley’s absence. Gaither is intelligent but not physical enough to play the middle. They finally shut down the run in the 2nd half, but be sure teams are watching this & planning to test the middle of our defense after the last 2 weeks. The worse defensive play might have been the defense on RB Best’s 75 yard screen play in the 2nd quarter. It gave me flashbacks of a vintage Westbrook play, but we should have been able to step up on that play & not let it become a TD. There were a few Eagles wo had a shot at him, but he is a special player in the making.

Preseason hero S Kurt Coleman also had 2 special teams penalties. That’s
not the way the rookie wanted to make the stat sheet, but the whole team
had too many penalties overall & that must be corrected before they face a
stronger team that will make the Eagles pay for their mistakes.
