Michael Vick Needs to Make the Short Throws Against the Redskins

Coming into this game, we have a match-up of two quarterbacks who love to make plays with the long ball. However, they are both quarterbacks who often have trouble with the shorter throws. We know all about Donovan McNabb’s problems with short passes, and we’ve seen some issues so far with Michael Vick as well.

I’m sure that the Redskins have watched a lot of film on Vick’s performance last week against the Jaguars. More specifically, I’m sure they studied the long touchdown throws caught by DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

The Redskins have a brutal secondary, which is real bad news because of the play makers we have on the offensive side of the ball. I believe that the Redskins know the Eagles will want to hit on some big plays and have probably emphasized to their secondary to not let anything behind them.

With the threat of the Eagles deep ball, it should create a lot of openings in the short game. If Jackson starts off the line in a dead sprint, the corner may very well think he’s going deep and turn from his back peddle. Once he does that, Jackson can break of the sprint and run a come back and be open. Vick needs to be able to deliver accurate passes on routes like this all day.

There’s no denying that the Eagles will probably hit on a big play or two against the Redskins. Their secondary is too bad to not make a couple plays. However, trying to live off the long ball can quickly kill drives. You’re not going to hit it every time, and this forces you into punts.

I think the Eagles have a great advantage offensively against the Redskins, but if they can’t continually pick up first downs, it won’t matter. Vick needs to be accurate with his short throws on Sunday to keep the chains moving.
