Sunday’s game between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles pitted two of the NFC’s better quarterbacks, Matt Ryan and Kevin Kolb. Naturally besides that, the game had meaning as borh teams were at or near the top of their division, prior to play Sunday.
In the battle of the quarterbacks, Kolb won big as he threw for 3 touchdowns – two to Jeremy Maclin – as Philadelphia easily disposed of Atlanta 31-17.
While the Eagles won the game, they also lost their top wide receiver DeSean Jackson to a head injury due to a hit on the helmet. Prior to the injury, Jackson burned the Falcons to the tune of 3 catches for 78 yards and two scores, one TD by way of a 34-yard run, giving Philadelphia an early 14-0 lead.
Atlanta finally got on the scoreboard via Tony Gonzalez’s 1-yard TD reception, cutting Philadelphia’s edge to 21-7.
Kolb put the game away for good at the 6:11 mark of the third quarter when he connected with Maclin on a 83-yard bomb down the left side, increasing the Eagles’ advantage to 28-10. Ryan tossed another TD pass to Gonzalez with 5:40 left in the game, but unfortunately came too late.
Kolb had an excellent effort as he went 23-of-29 for 326 yards with 3 TDs and an interception while Ryan went 23-of-42 for 150 yards with a pair of scores and an INT.
The Eagles had 154 yards on the gorund, led by LeSean McCoy with 64 yards while Jackson ran twice for 44 yards and a TD; eldra Buckley rushed 12 times for 40 yards.
The Falcons’ leading rusher was Michael Turner, who rushed for 45 yards.
Maclin was the Eagles leading receiver with 7 receptions for a season-high 154 yards and 2 TDs while Jason Avant caught 5 for 62 yards. The Falcons were led by Michael Jenkins with 5 catches for 99 yards while Roddy White grabbed 6 for 83 yards.
Philadelphia (4-2) plays again next Sunday when they travel to Nashville to take on the Tennessee Titans while Atlanta (4-2) returns home to host the Cincinnati Bengals – also next Sunday.
