Will This Be Kevin Kolb’s Final Chance to Prove Himself?

It doesn’t seem likely that Michael Vick will be back to full health by Sunday, so Kevin Kolb will get the starting nod for the third week in a row. Although Vick has played very well for the Eagles this season, it’s hard to argue that Kolb hasn’t play equally as well.

Head coach Andy Reid has said that Vick will be the starter once he is back to full strength, but if Kolb duplicates the performance he had against the Falcons this week against the Titans, how can you put him back on the bench?

We’ve seen Reid change his mind this year in regards to the quarterbacks, and no matter what he does down the road, he’s going to be scrutinized.

I can’t see Kolb approaching this game much differently then the last two games he’s prepared for. However, you have to believe there is a little bit of added pressure for him. If he plays poorly, it makes it look like a no-brainer to start Vick after the bye week. I think it’s just the opposite if he plays well though.

Those are the two extremes. What if he plays mediocre? If that’s the case, I think you have to look at the scoreboard. A mediocre performance may not be much of a persuasive argument for him to continue playing, but if he gets the win at the end of the day, that’s what matters most.

I think the odds are a bit stacked against Kolb right now, because I think there are more people in this city who believe Vick should start. I think the confidence level is higher with Vick, but it has come down a bit after how we’ve seen Kolb play the last two games. People were worried about Kolb after his performance against Green Bay, but he has done well enough to have people focus on how he’s been playing recently.

Kolb will get at least one more opportunity to prove that he deserves to be the starting quarterback for the Eagles. In the end, I hope he plays to a high enough level that Reid has a problem making a decision. It’s a good problem to have.
