Ellis Hobbs had a bad game against the Titans. He had such a bad game that he has lost his starting job to fellow teammate Dimitri Patterson.
Sunday will mark Patterson’s first career NFL start at corner back and he will be tested immediately. With shutdown corner Asante Samuel lining up opposite of him, you have to believe that Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will look to attack Patterson’s side early and often on Sunday.
Patterson was a guy I wasn’t really sold in Training Camp, but he played very well in the action he saw during the Eagles preseason games. I didn’t think it was enough to earn him a starting spot on the team, but it was a nice improvement nonetheless.
He’s seen fairly limited action in the regular season, and for a breakdown of what he’s done so far on the field this year, click here.
I’m not sure if the move is because of confidence the team has seen in Patterson in practice, or a lack of confidence they have in Hobbs. It’s no question that Hobbs had a big part in the Eagles loss to the Titans, but I was pretty happy with the way he’d been playing before that.
As I mentioned, there’s no question that Manning will attack him this Sunday. I’m sure the Eagles will look to give Patterson safety help over the top, and I hope it’s better then the help Hobbs received against the Titans.
I can’t really say I saw this move coming. I know that Patterson is more of a physical guy then Hobbs, and maybe that’s something the Eagles prefer in this match-up. The Eagles have had plenty of time to watch film on the Colts with the week off, and maybe they’ve seen the Colts receivers having trouble against physical corners.
I’m sure Patterson, along with the rest of the Eagles, will have a close eye on the Colts-Texans match-up tonight. Hopefully, Patterson is taking notes.
