Brent Celek’s Late Touchdown Reception Won’t Translate into More Looks

Brent Celek vs. Bears

Above, you see Brent Celek pulling in an amazing touchdown reception against the Bears last week with under two minutes remaining in the game. It’s still a mystery how that ball made it through, but it was well placed by Michael Vick and Celek never lost concentration.

Shortly after this play, I began to hear an uproar from Eagles fans. Everyone thought that this reception would be the turning point for Celek’s less then impressive season. They thought this was the type of play that was needed for the coaches to develop confidence in Celek and for Celek to develop confidence in himself.

It’s a great thought, but it’s simply not going to happen.

With five games remaining in the regular season, Celek is currently 50 receptions behind the number of catches he had in 2009. He also had five more touhdowns then last year and 684 more yards. In order to catch last years numbers, Celek will have to average 10 receptions for 136.8 yards and a touchdown the next five weeks. That’s not very likely for a guy who hasn’t caught more than four passes in a single game this season.

Despite the lack of production out of Celek this year, and the lack of production out of the tight end position altogether, the Eagles offense is still averaging 252.6 yards per game. This ranks them 8th overall in the league.

Would we like to see production out of Celek? Absolutely. However, the Eagles just haven’t been factoring the tight end into the game plan very much. Celek has been bothered by a wrist injury and I think it may be bothering him more than he’s leading on. He’s dropped a lot of balls this year.

If the Eagles had the Celek of 2009 in the line-up, you might see the offense be even more explosive. However, the game plan has changed this season and a nice touchdown grab isn’t going to change that.
