Eagles Organization Denies Jon Gruden Rumors

Late Sunday night, Facebook and Twitter exploded with news that Andy Reid was being replaced by Jon Gruden as the Philadelphia Eagles head coach. The rumor started from a one-time Eagles fullback, Kyle Eckel. Eckel posted on his Facebook something about Gruden replacing Reid as the head coach, and new spread like crazy of Reid being replaced. Every social networking site managed to pick up the news, and it seemed to be true.

It was fueled with another rumor of Gruden being seen in Philadelphia on Sunday, which only made the case even stronger. There was no word from the Eagles organization, and Eagles fans across the country held their breath waiting for a professional announcement. Then the Eagles released this statement,”Early this morning we have received several inquiries regarding the rumors regarding Andy Reid and Jon Gruden,” read the statement. “This was simply a rumor and there is no basis to it at all. It is simply not true.”

Gruden has said multiple times that he has no interest in coaching again, as he is currently an announcer for ESPN. As for Reid, he is locked into a contract until 2013, and it would be a shocking move to fire him with that many years left on his contract. Reid has also been in the process of making personnel choices for the organization throughout the entire off-season, making an even stronger case that Reid isn’t going anywhere.

This was simply a case of a rumor catching too much, and the whole situation being blown out of proportion.

Yeah. There are a lot of people who wouldn’t mind seeing Gruden in Philly. I am a fan of Andy Reid though. He has had ENORMOUS success in the past 10 years. There is no reason to fire a coach that get’s a team to the playoffs every season. I understand the frustration, but Gruden would not exactly be the answer to the Eagles problems.
