The Eagles are scheduled to host a private workout with Oregon linebacker Casey Matthews, this upcoming Thursday and Friday. Over the next few weeks Matthews has plans to visit with the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, and then the Denver Broncos. The younger brother of Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews has generated much interest, even though he was unable to perform throughout the majority of the combine due to a shoulder injury.
Although this is still only a workout, this could be a huge steal for the Eagles if they do draft Matthews later in the draft. Projected currently as a third round draft pick, Matthews could shoot his way up into the second round based entirely off of what his brother accomplished in the NFL. However, it’s not like the younger Matthews is a soft linebacker by any means. While at Oregon, Matthews dominated the entire season and proved that he can be a reliable defensive presence.
The Eagles defense struggled last season when Stewart Bradley went down with injury, and a solid defender like Matthews could be a great pick in the second round. Due to that shoulder injury at the combine, his draft stock has taken a solid hit, and that’s the only reason he will be available in the late second. As long as the Eagles don’t find another linebacker talent at that same pick, or if he has already been taken, then Matthews could walk out of the second round as one of the biggest defensive steals of this draft class.
