Philadelphia Eagles Select Alex Henery in The Fourth Round of The 2011 NFL Draft

Alex Henery The Eagles Fourth Round Selection in The 2011 NFL Draft

The Eagles managed to score quite a few picks in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, and with their second selection the Eagles drafted Alex Henery, kicker, from Nebraska. This is one of the most telling Andy Reid picks that I have seen in a number of years, as that surely means that David Akers is now done in Philadelphia. The Eagles were having issues getting Akers to sign a transition tag, guaranteeing that he would be back in 2011 and beyond.

On the positive side, Henery was the best kicker in college football and can boot the ball. During his time at Nebraska, Henery was making 50 yard field goals on a consistent basis, with wind and other factors included. He also led the NCAA in touchbacks as some of his kicks would actually just go entirely out of the back of the endzone. There was a joke in Nebraska that if he wanted too, he could field goals from a kickoff.

During his career he made 96.6% of his field goals at Nebraska. Not only does he have absolutely crazy power behind his kicks, but he has deadly accuracy when kicking field goals. Knocking in nine field goals during Bowl Games and Conference Championship games, according to ESPN, “The guy is clutch.”

This is sad no doubt to see the Eagles select a kicker as that surely means that David Akers is now done as a member of the Eagles. Akers missed several key field goals during the Eagles last playoff run, and partly contributed to the loss. However, Akers will go down as one of the greatest Eagles of all-time.

Yeah the kid is a nice kicker. Its just ashame he coulda been drafted in the 6th or 7th round. Every pick in the Eagles draft they could have got in a later round. Way to get some D line help. CB thats a project. I just hope this means that they are going to spend some big money in FA on D line and a CB.

I disagree Fran – This kid is the real deal. Prior to Henery, the last 2 kickers from Nebraska have gone to the NFL as well as the last 2 punters. This kid is better than all of them (both punting and kicking). He will break Akers records before it is all said and done. CBS had Henery at 138th pick and he went 120th. He was going to go somewhere in the 4th.. glad Philly got em!
