As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, it’s hard not to be just a little excited that the team was talking with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III at the NFL combine.
During a Thursday night interview, RG3 told reporters that he had only met with one team since arriving in Indianapolis — the Eagles. He was his usually bright and chipper self, throwing jokes around casually, and keeping reporters on their toes before mentioning Philadelphia talking to him. Despite the Eagles talking to him first, they will hardly be the last, as this kid is going to get at least one phone call from every single NFL team.
In terms of the Eagles reaching out to him — what does it mean?
Not much, sadly. Philadelphia is locked into Michael Vick, not only based off performance, but also that massive contract. Not to mention, the Eagles draft 15th overall, about 14 picks after when Griffin III is supposed to be taken. Philadelphia would have to do a massive trade-up to acquire him, something that is definitely not in the best interest of the team as a whole. To trade into that second overall spot, (currently held by the St. Louis Rams), it would likely take the Eagles first, second, the Arizona Cardinals second, and a first next season to even get involved in the bidding war. And even then, it may not be enough.
The Eagles have enough defensive needs to sink a ship, and it’s not realistic to trade away the entire draft to snag RG3. As sexy a pick as it may be, and as bright as the future could become, the chances of Philadelphia making an earth-shattering move like trading-up to draft Griffin III are incredibly slim. Still, it’s a fun idea.
