Following a relatively successful one-and-done season with the New York Jets, wide receiver Plaxico Burress has decided to test his value in free agency — and if it were up to him, he would be playing for the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to numerous report, the ex-Giant and ex-Jet is very interested in coming to Philadelphia and playing with his long-time childhood friend, Michael Vick. All jokes aside about the two jailbirds, Burress went as far as to say during an interview that, “nothing else would make me happier,” if the Eagles were to offer him a contract. There’s no doubt, that after what happened last season in New York, Burress would be looking to bail, but would it be a good move for the Eagles to pick him up?
The biggest factor in Philadelphia’s decision on Burress will rely on what ends up happening with DeSean Jackson. The Eagles franchised tagged Jackson, but it’s widely believed that he will be traded away before the draft, and if that does indeed happen, Burress would be an excellent pick-up. Behind Jackson on the depth chart, Philly has Jeremy Maclin, who is incredibly solid, and then Jason Avant who is best suited for the slot.
Philadelphia would be lacking an outside presene without Jackson, and Burress could fill that role perfectly. He may not have the elite speed of #10, but Burress does play a very physical game, something the Eagles haven’t had at the position in a long time. His tall 6-5, 232, body can box and out-jump defenders and he makes for an excellent deep threat on streak and post plays.
But Burress will come in most handy in the red zone, an area where Philadelphia has been mind numbingly bad. The lack of a true red zone presence at receiver has doomed many an Eagle drive, and Burress could help alleviate some of the issue. Again, with his large frame and jumping ability, he is able to create a mismatch in the end zone and get separation.Philadelphia has been looking for a threat like this for a few seasons, but has failed in finding a suitable player.
Most Eagles fans will throw their hands into the air with frustration at the idea of signing more free agents after last season’s end result, but the fact is — Burress would be a much welcomed addition to the team. He is excited to play in Philadelphia, and can provide that red zone target the Eagles have been lacking for so long. He may not have the most reputable past, but even with that in mind, Burress would fit in perfectly with the Eagles.
