Philadelphia Eagles Pro-Bowl left tackle, Jason Peters, has ruptured his achilles tendon during a routine workout in Texas.
This loss can’t be overstated.
A timetable has not yet been set for Peters recovery, but he will more than likely miss the entire 2012 season after surgery to repair his Achilles.
Peters was easily the Eagles best offensive lineman and was a total anchor on the left side. Last season, scouts praised that he could have very well been the best tackle in football, and he contributed greatly to Philadelphia’s massive improvement on the offensive line.
The good news is that Todd Herremans can play left tackle very easily, and has had to multiple times in the past. But for added insurance, the Eagles re-signed King Dunlap (or Queen as he is more fittingly called), to a one-year deal. The bad news is that with Herremans sliding to left tackle, it leaves a massive need at the right tackle position.
Some alternatives to finding a replacement to Peters could involve the trading of Asante Samuel, or drafting another lineman. The idea of using the 15th overall selection the Eagles have on another offensive lineman is really sickening, but it might be the only option to keep Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy protected. Unfortunately, free agency has really been picked clean, and there really isn’t anyone hanging around that would be worth pursuing.
This injury comes at one of the worst times for the Eagles, as the team had established great offensive line chemistry last season. It might be too early to say, but we could be seeing a Philadelphia offensive line that is comparable to that of 2009-2010. In other words — don’t expect Vick or McCoy to have any time or blocking.
