Looks like Philadelphia ended up getting the man of the hour.
Well, at least the Eagles man of the hour. Philadelphia did a quick trade with the Seattle Seahawks to move up three spots to 12th overall to draft Mississippi State defensive tackle, Fletcher Cox. There was almost no doubt that the Eagles would draft one of the many defensive lineman available, but it was widely known that Cox was the top prospect the team had in mind.
Cox will be able to fill-in from the get-go next to Cullen Jenkins, easily giving the Eagles one of the most talented defensive lines in football.
Despite having a slow start at Mississippi State this past season, Cox heated up and ended up finishing as one of the most talented defensive tackles in college football. He is lightning quick, has great footwork, and has excellent instincts when playing the run and the pass. In other words — he’s a near perfect fit for Jim Washburn’s system. Any weakness that the Eagles may have had up the middle has totally been solved, and Cox should make an impact from day one in Philadelphia.
Possibly the best part about Cox’s game is the fact that he has the athletic ability both on the inside at defensive tackle, and also the talent to bounce out to the outside to play end if needed. The best way to describe him would be a utility player, and he really will be a perfect fit in Philadelphia.
With the void on the defensive line filled, hopefully Philadelphia will address the needs at outside linebacker and corner in the later rounds.
