Mike Kafka Secures Back-Up QB Role for 2012

The Kaf-Gun!

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Mike Kafka has all but secured the role of back-up quarterback behind Michael Vick.

Earlier this off-season when the Eagles signed journeyman extraordinaire Trent Edwards, it was evident that the team wanted up the pressure on Kafka. However, his future with the team was put into serious doubt when Philadelphia selected Arizona quarterback Nick Foles in the draft, a player that was essentially called Kafka 2.0. With three other quarterbacks on the roster, and with limited in-game experience, there was no promises for Kafka, and many thought he might be on his way out.

However, Kafka has managed to keep his spot on the team by gliding into the much sought after backup role. There are still concerns floating around camp that #8 isn’t quite a sufficient backup to Vick, a player who has been well-versed with injuries throughout his career — especially in recent seasons with Philadelphia. But both Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg reinforced their belief and faith in Kafka by giving him high praise to the media.

This likely means that Edwards will not make the roster, Foles will be slotted at three, Kafka in the two and Vick as the starter.

I love the choice of keeping Kafka and giving him the nod for backup. This kid has really impressed me since being drafted, all jokes about his arm strength aside. During his brief appearances in games against the Falcons and Giants he showed flashes of something great, and I like what he has to offer. Knowing Vick’s tendency to get hurt, having a player like Kafka waiting on the bench is never a bad thing.

Plus — in case you forgot, just about anyone is better than Vince Young.
