Defensive Linemen Adjusting To New Scheme

Eagles’ offseason activities began this week, and many defensive linemen are changing their bodies in order to fit into a base 3-4 scheme.
Defensive ends Brandon Graham and Trent Cole are both dropping weight as they transition to outside linebacker. After playing at 275 pounds last year, Graham is now at 270 with a target playing weight of 260. Trent Cole did not give numbers, but wants to be lighter in order to be more effective in coverage and in space.

The outside linebacker position is crowded with Connor Barwin, Graham, and Cole figuring to eat up the vast majority of the snaps. Therefore, the Eagles are telling last year’s second round pick Vinny Curry to add weight to play end. He’s up to 274 pounds, but still has a ways to go. Typically, 3-4 defensive ends weigh about 300 pounds. Curry is not a good fit in the 3-4 defense, and is a natural edge rusher, not an interior player. I seriously question his future in Philadelphia.
