News & Notes Heading Into Round 2

  • The Eagles were set on using their first round pick on either Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel, Lane Johnson, or Dion Jordan (in no particular order), according to Chip Kelly. Miami really needed to jump to the third pick in order to secure Jordan.
  • All three NFC East teams who picked in the first round took an offensive lineman. Travis Frederick will be viewed as more of a reach than Justin Pugh, but he’s actually the superior prospect. Both should be solid starters, although Frederick is purely an interior lineman and Pugh has somewhat limited upside as a right tackle or guard.
  • Geno Smith will not return to Radio City Music Hall for day two of the draft. He figures to come off the board quickly, as the Jaguars, Browns, Cardinals, Jets, or Eagles could have more interest in him in the second round.
  • The Eagles hold the third pick of the second round and an early third round pick as well. I look for them to add a line of scrimmage defender (DE, NT, OLB). My favorite remaining prospects are SMU’s Margus Hunt, Ohio State’s Johnathan Hankins, and Florida State’s Cornellius Carradine.
