Notes From Rookie Minicamp: Day 1

  • 2 veterans are trying out for the Eagles along with the rookies. They are LBs Chris Gocong (a former Eagle) and Gerald McRath. Even if the Eagles decide to offer them contracts, they are long shots to make the team.
  • TE Zach Ertz on the offensive scheme: “I think it’s kind of what you saw at Oregon.” Don’t expect Chip Kelly to run the same offense that he did at Oregon, but he believes that what works in college can translate into success at the NFL level. With Matt Barkley or Nick Foles at the helm, he will have to adapt, but Michael Vick could run a very similar system to what Kelly ran at Oregon. The Eagles have already practiced the zone read play, which was a staple at Oregon and can only work if the QB is a threat to tuck the ball and run.
  • OT Lane Johnson took most of his snaps at right tackle, which is what everybody expected. Pencil him in as the starter across from Jason Peters.
  • DE Joe Kruger currently weighs 270 pounds, but aims to get into the 280-285 range. His attempt to gain weight suggests that he will be a 5-technique (DE in a 3-4 system) as opposed to a rush linebacker. 5-technique is his best position, but the Eagles list him as a DE/LB hybrid.
  • Rookies are noting that Kelly’s practices indeed run at a breakneck pace. No surprise here. Kelly believes that superior conditioning and a fast-paced offense wears down the defense over the course of a game and will incorporate that aspect of his offense with the Eagles.
