Jason Avant Practicing At DB

Clay Harbor isn’t the only Eagle playing on both sides of the football for Chip Kelly. Veteran receiver Jason Avant has been working out as a slot corner, according to Comcast SportsNet’s Geoff Mosher.

While Chip Kelly runs his teams differently from everybody else, typically, players who experiment with drastic position changes are facing long odds to make the roster. Avant does not have the run-after-catch ability that Chip Kelly wants in his receivers and figures to be replaced by tight ends in the slot. His bloated $2.71 million salary doesn’t help his chances of making the team, either. The Eagles could save $1.29 million against the cap by releasing him.

Expect Kelly to award slot receiver snaps to tight ends James Casey and Zach Ertz or to more elusive players like Damaris Johnson or even DeSean Jackson. Jason Avant is a west coast receiver, and as a holdover from the Andy Reid era, he is likely being fazed out in Philadelphia.
