DeSean Jackson Fires Agent Rosenhaus

WR DeSean Jackson recently fired his agent Drew Rosenhaus and could have an eye towards jumping on the Jay-Z-led Roc Nation Sports bandwagon. Rosenhaus has represented Jackson since he entered the league and negotiated a back-loaded 5 year, $47 million pact prior to the 2012 season.

From a football standpoint, Jackson is unlikely to see all of the remaining money on his contract. The Eagles would save $6.5 million by cutting him after the upcoming season and $10 million by cutting him after 2014. Jackson is not worth the $44 million he is due over the last four years of his deal. He’s more of a situational deep threat than a number one target. Of course, his role may change under Chip Kelly, but Kelly’s emphasis on tight ends and the running game make it hard to envision an increased workload for Jackson.

Off the field, Jackson cited his interest in a music career after football as a reason why he is eyeing Jay-Z’s firm. Jackson has already dabbled in the rap game, and he apparently loves it enough to try to make it his full-time job after his time in the NFL is up.

Ultimately, player agents only have a noticeable impact on the game when they convince their clients to hold out, so this news is more interesting than important. For what it’s worth, Rosenhaus was regarded as one of the most skilled negotiators in sports while Roc Nation Sports (if Jackson indeed signs with them) is a complete wild card.
