Though several Eagles have expressed their frustration at the ongoing quarterback competition and thrown their support behind Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy wants to leave the decision up to Chip Kelly.
“That’s why they pay Chip Kelly the big bucks, to pick the quarterback,” McCoy said, via Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Whoever he picks, I’m fine with. As long as I get my carries, I don’t care who they pick.”
Coming out of McCoy’s mouth, these words are a bit unexpected. McCoy has been one of Vick’s biggest supporters, often stating that Vick was one of his boyhood idols and that playing alongside him was a special opportunity. It’s possible that Vick’s pedestrian play has led McCoy to sour on him, but more than likely, McCoy is just trying to be politically correct and a good teammate to Nick Foles. Unfortunately for McCoy, he came off self-centered when he said that his carries are the only thing he cares about. As the feature back in Chip Kelly’s fast-paced, run-oriented attack, he should receive more carries than he ever dreamed of under Andy Reid.
McCoy’s comments are more interesting than significant, so don’t expect them to affect the team’s performance. While Michael Vick and Nick Foles are locked in a fierce battle for playing time, McCoy’s status as the focal point of the offense is very secure. The Eagles will need a big season out of McCoy to be competitive in the NFC East.
