Eagles second team ILB Jason Phillips tore his right ACL at practice on Monday and will miss the entire 2013 season. Phillips wasn’t a serious contender for a starting job, but he has been a solid reserve and special teams ace throughout his career. While his loss certainly doesn’t kill the Eagles, it’s not a good feeling to watch the injuries begin to pile up in July. Fortunately, the Eagles have solid depth at the inside linebacker position. Behind starters DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks, Jamar Chaney and Casey Matthews both have experience as NFL starters while Jake Knott and Emmanuel Acho have shown promise as young prospects.
For what it’s worth, Chip Kelly’s training camp has been very low on contact. In contrast to Andy Reid, who ran one of the more physical camps in the league, Kelly stated that his players will get their live tackling in during the preseason, not training camp. He is doing everything he can to keep his players healthy, but some injuries in the NFL simply cannot be avoided.
