Riley Cooper Drops ‘N’ Word At Concert

UPDATE: Cooper spoke to the media and revealed that he has been fined “a good amount of money” by the Eagles.

Riley Cooper was in line to inherit most the snaps that the team was counting on starting receiver Jeremy Maclin to play before his torn ACL. That is, until the fourth-year player did this.

Cooper has since admitted to using a slur at a Kenny Chesney concert, but the damage is done. Cooper might have just blown his golden opportunity, and an NFL locker room is one of the last places a racist wants to be. Neither the league nor the Eagles have handed down any punishment yet, either in the form of a fine or suspension. It’s rare – if not unprecedented – for an NFL player to get caught using such an offensive term on video, so it’s unclear whether or not Cooper will be disciplined.

Ultimately, the relationships with his teammates that Cooper damaged are much costlier than any league-imposed punishment. If the incident indeed ostracizes Cooper from the organization, he will have a hard time sticking in Philadelphia or any other NFL city. A label as a racist will be extremely tough for him to shake, especially in a line of work that relies so extensively on trust, teamwork, and camaraderie. Monitor the fallout from this incident closely, as it could either blow over in a few days or potentially end Cooper’s career.
