Vick Outplaying Foles In Training Camp

QBs Nick Foles and Michael Vick are locked in a tight battle for the starting job.

QBs Nick Foles and Michael Vick are locked in a tight battle for the starting job.

Throughout the offseason, neither Nick Foles nor Michael Vick convinced Chip Kelly that he was a franchise quarterback and the obvious man for the job. Now that the pads are on and training camp is in full swing, however, it appears as though Michael Vick is finally gaining some separation from his younger teammate.

Over the past week, various reports concluded that Foles “hasn’t looked the same” in live situations and that Vick has been “tremendous” and “gapped” Foles in the quarterback competition.

I always speculated that Vick would come out on top of the competition based on my assessment of his and Foles’ 2012 game tapes and leadership qualities.

However, these reports mark the first time that a leader in the competition can be identified purely based on on-field performance and execution of Chip Kelly’s system.

Though Vick is now the favorite to win the starting job, it’s way too early to count Foles out. The second-year man out of Arizona will have four preseason games and plenty more opportunities in practice to step up his game and potentially steal the job from Vick. I just don’t see it happening. Forgetting about his athletic ability for a second, Vick is still a better player than Foles. He has much better arm talent, goes through his progression faster, and has more experience.

With Chip Kelly in no rush to name a starter, a lot can happen between now and week 1. Eagles Gab will keep you posted with any new developments in the quarterback competition.
