Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer believes that Michael Vick is a shoe-in for the starting quarterback job after watching the Eagles’ joint practices with the Patriots.
Glazer is usually not one to bet against. He is one of the most reliable NFL insiders along with Adam Schefter and Jason LaCanfora and has excellent relationships with players around the league. In Philadelphia, he was seen speaking with many Eagles, so it’s safe to say he has his finger on the pulse of the team. He took to Twitter after the Eagles’ Wednesday practice:
“Watching Eagles it doesn’t seem like there’s any [question] at all that Mike Vick will be starting QB. He could be extremely tough [with] Chip’s offense.”
Most beat writers actually declared Nick Foles the Eagles’ best quarterback over the course of the joint practices, if not by a slight margin. Therefore, Glazer probably accounted for factors besides on-field execution in his assessment of the team’s quarterback situation.
While Vick certainly looks to be leading the quarterback competition, he has far from secured the starting job. While Glazer is almost always on the money, don’t put it past Chip Kelly to pull a fast one and shock the media. Some skeptics believe that Nick Foles was never a serious contender for the job, but Kelly would gain no advantage by staging such an elaborate smokescreen. The top spot on the depth chart is still likely to be decided by preseason performance.
