On Tuesday morning, Chip Kelly informed his quarterbacks that Michael Vick would open the regular season as the starter.
Vick has pretty clearly been the team’s best quarterback, and it wouldn’t make much sense for Kelly to drag out the competition any further. Since the starters hardly play in the fourth preseason game, the upcoming match-up with the Jaguars is essentially the final dress rehearsal for the ones. Now that Vick is officially the starter and LeSean McCoy and Jason Peters are back from injuries, the Eagles may be able to trot out their starting 22 in Jacksonville.
As much as fans want to believe that Vick has rediscovered himself, he has flashed brilliance before but has never been able to sustain it. Chip Kelly offers Vick a unique opportunity to turn over a new leaf at age 33, but injuries, decision making, and a thin receiving corps remain obstacles to Vick rebounding and saving his career. While the odds are against Vick suiting up for all 16 games, he’s now an intriguing risk-reward QB2 pick in fantasy leagues and still brings a rare skill set to the table in real football. He has shown nothing but encouraging signs through two preseason games.
