The Eagles built a 27-point lead Sunday, but quickly realized that no lead is safe in the NFL.
At least they didn’t need to learn it the hard way.
The Eagles defense hung on Sunday for a huge 34-28 win to move to 4-1 on the season, but all that anyone seemed to want to talk about after the game was finding a way to put teams away.
“We have to learn how to finish better,” QB Nick Foles said. “As a team, we’re not there yet.”
Being 4-1 and ‘not there yet’ is not a bad thing, and for the Eagles, they used a combo of special teams as well as defense Sunday to get the job done.
Foles threw two touchdown passes, and the team got a TD each from the special teams and defense in the win.
Up big, the Rams rallied behind QB Austin Davis. The never say die Rams rallied from down 34-7 for three straight scores to close it to 34-28 with 4:41 left.
St.Louis had the ball at their own 7 with 1:47 left, and Davis went to work, hitting a 43-yard pass to WR Brian Quick on first down, but Philadelphia’s defense finally made a stop. Davis was under pressure when he threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-13.
Davis finished with 375 yards passing and three TDs in his first game since being elevated to starter.
The Eagles got a TD after Chris Maragos returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, and a score on D when Cedric Thornton recovered a fumble for a score and nearly took another one the distance.
“Tough 4-1, soft 4-1, it doesn’t matter,” Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. “You’re 4-1 and you go back to work Tuesday.”
The Eagles have scored seven TDs on special teams and defense, including five in the past two games.
While the season will get only tougher, it’s good to be three games over .500 after just five games, and the team hasn’t come close to playing their best ball yet.
