In a new GQ interview, staff writer Tyler R. Tynes sits down with Jalen Hurts ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles QB’s Monday Night Football debut. Hurts, who is now leading the team after a season in which quarterback Carson Wentz was traded away and head coach Doug Pederson was fired, opens up about the past year. He also talks about what he’s excited about developing in Philly, following a long line of black quarterbacks on the Eagles, becoming the first brand ambassador ever for Eastbay, and more.
Last year, as the Eagles traded Wentz, fired Pederson, and basically introduced a whole new team overnight, fans and journalists didn’t see or hear much from the rookie Hurts. The new QB had chosen to “weather through” the controversy, and just let his play “do the talking,” instead of focusing on the external factors out of his control.
It helped that Hurts has what he calls “a good relationship” with a lot of guys on the team including Jason Kelce, Greg Ward, DeVonta Smith, and that he believes in his new head coach, Nick Sirianni.
Hurts says he’s been able to observe how Sirianni sees the game and how he coached and prepared other quarterbacks he’s had in the past. and is excited to be able to “do this thing” with him.
Hurts also talks about what it’s been like as a black quarterback coming into a city with a long line of black QB’s.
“I hold that in high value and high regards,” says Hurts. “I know the history of the position here, especially the dual threats we’ve had: Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Randall Cunningham. I just want to carry that torch the right way moving forward. And the best way to do that is to win. Winning is the motive. It’s the ultimatum.”
Hurts tells GQ he’s “happy to get his groove on” with Eastbay, where he will be the first brand ambassador. The company has been a part of his life since he was young, getting excited when the catalogue arrived in the mail in time for football season. “They always just came in the clutch for me,” he says.
Last and certainly not least, Hurts admits that “Larry’s” is the only cheesesteak he’s “had and liked” in Philly. (I’ve lived in the area my whole life and have never heard of Larry’s before, but the reviews are pretty good, so I might have to try them out)
